House Sitting Jobs – How To Find Them

When looking for the best house sitting jobs you have to take into consideration certain important aspects in this regard. If you get the right job it can be both rewarding and fun. However, there are a lot of pitfalls that you can stumble into if you do not go into your job hunt with both eyes open.

Once you start looking for a job as a house-sitter you have to think about what the owner is looking for in a sitter. Are they simply looking for somebody to stay in their home and keep it secure, or are they looking for somebody to water their plants, walk their dog and keep the house in spit-spot shape?

With so many self employment jobs to choose from, you have to decide if house sitting jobs are in fact the best jobs for your specific situation. Do you have a family that stays with you and whom you have to support? Are you often busy in the evenings and won’t always be available to watch the house you are “sitting” between 8pm and 8am? Do you have any kind of criminal record? Do you need to make a lot of money in very little time? If you answered yes to any of these questions it is quite possible that you are not best suited for a job as a house-sitter.

If you have a family that needs you for support, or if you have your own home that you need to watch and keep organized it will prove quite difficult to give the needed attention to the house you are “sitting”. Should you be unavailable on many evenings that you are supposed to watch the house, the owners will become understandably worried about the security of their home.

Most home owners will do a thorough background search before employing a house-sitter to watch after their home, and as such if you have any criminal record it will be difficult to find an owner that will trust you with their belongings.

As to the final question, house sitting jobs are not the best paying jobs that are available for those looking at how to go self employed, and as such should only be considered if you are aware of the pay-grade that you will be looking at.

If you are still ready to become a great house-sitter after considering all of the points above, you can search for home owners that are looking for candidates, both online and offline. The best ways to find owners online are through craigslist and other similar classified sites. Offline, you can consult your local newspapers and magazines, as these will have the latest house sitting jobs in your area.

Self employed people, do your friends and family constantly interrupt your work?

One of the annoying trasntitions from looking at self employed jobs to actually going self employed is that one of the first obstacles you’re going to run into is managing time – both how you manage your time, and how you let other people manage your time. I am talking about the inevitable interruptions from friends and family when it comes to the latter. Perhaps you may have an exceptional circumstance by having a new born baby or toddler to look after, although that particular circumstance is not the subject of this post; rather in this post we are talking about adult interruptions.

I found the lead answer below rather amusing.

My mom is self-employed with two full time jobs. Nobody gives a thought to visiting or calling in the middle of the day. Do you have this problem too? How can you politely tell people? It seems they all think since she’s her own boss, she can take a break anytime. This is making her crazy. What to do without being rude?
Robert…do you really do that to your friends and family? Effective, but harsh. There must be a softer way.

you promptly tell them in no uncertain terms u are working. good bye first time.
2nd time u give them a bill for 100$ per hour.
3rd time hang up or do not open the dooor.
until folks pay up front for ur life they get the door.
ur mom can be a business person or door matt – her choice.

It’s true though, if we’re going to avoid interruptions, we have to put our foot down in no uncertain terms. So if someone does refuse to acknowledge your verbal request, then yes bill them – maybe not a whole $100 as they might take it completely the wrong way, but certainly gets the message across if they know you’re serious about charging for your time.

Is An Avon Rep A Self-Employed Job?

Doing a network marketing business? Representing a well known company that sells products via independent distributors? Well you may be wondering like the Avon disctributor below whether these types of work are classes as self employed jobs?

i am filling in a job application and its asking if i have ever been self-employed and i am a avon rep so am i self-employed or not???

From a tax point of view, I think you are self-employed as an Avon rep. There is no sick or holiday pay, you work hours to suit yourself, you can delegate the work to someone else if you wish, you are not working on employer’s premises or using his equipment. There is no contract of employment. You would take any profit or loss (for example if travelling expenses were more than your profits). You should complete an annual Tax Return including a self-employment page. You do not get “wages” from Avon, just your profits after you pay for your supplies.
Look at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk , then into individuals, other topics, then into toolbar, employment status indicator.

So is an avon rep a self-employed job? If you are earning an extra income from a sustained pursuit like being an Avon rep, then you can expect these to be classed as self employed jobs. You should get in touch with your local tax office to be sure.

Looking for a part time job where I can be off when my children get home from school?

It can be very frustrating when your babies are no longer babies and are children off to school and suddenly as a homemaker you no longer have children to tend to during the day – but that does not mean that self employed jobs are out of the question for you. In fact many homemakers especially thanks to the aid of the Internet now have greater and easier access to finding jobs that they can fit in around their homemaking.

Here’s an interesting question from someone that wants to be able to work while her kids are at school.

I’m a stay at home mom looking for a job that would be flexible. I would like a REAL job (not a stay at home job) that would allow me to work part time, get off when my kids get out of school and not work summers. Is there any careers that would allow this other than teaching of course. I do not want to teach. I’d be willing to go back to school and study something. Just can’t think of a carrer that would allow this. Even flipping burgers at McDonalds wouldn’t allow you to just take off all summer.

Home Health care, or any temp agency it all depends on your skills….

Other things that could be done include pet sitting, babysitting another parents babies, market research or mystery shopping, any hobbies that could become paid roles…
